How to Force Restart iPhone 8 and iPhone X

Sometimes, your iPhone doesn’t work quite right… an app may refuse to open or the screen may freeze. For the most part, Apple® has done a superb job of adding self-correcting code to each iteration of the iOS operating system to prevent this. Here are some steps to take when something isn’t quite right…

Restart the Application

If an app doesn’t work right (ex: you can’t scroll up or down), try to force it to quit and then reopen it. There is open debate on whether to routinely close applications or to leave them open. We recommend that you don’t close an application unless it is behaving badly or draining your battery.

To force close an application, open the App Switcher:

iPhone X

Slide Open the App Switcher from the bottom edge of the screen and pause in the middle of the screen. Touch and hold the App, then Swipe up to close it.

Double Click the Home Button. Swipe the app up to close it.

Restart the iPhone

Powering down your phone once in a while is pretty healthy. It lets your phone conduct some system checks, clear log files, and start-up fresh.  It has the advantage of clearing out memory that could be corrupted over time leading to your apps behaving badly.  Below are the steps to power down your phone:

iPhone X

Press and hold BOTH the side button and one of the two-volume buttons. A slider will appear confirming that you want to power the phone off. Drag the slider.

all iPhone models 6, 7 and 8 to include the Plus and S versions

Press and hold the side (Sleep/Wake) button. A slider will appear confirming that you want to power off the phone. Drag the slider.

all older iPhone models

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button. A slider will appear confirming that you want to power off the phone. Drag the slider.

Now simply turn your phone back on by pressing the side button or Sleep/Wake button until the Apple® logo splash appears.

Force Restart the iPhone

Use the Force Restart when your phone becomes unresponsive, bluetooth functions poorly, or network refuses to connect.  Just like taking your power cord out of the wall, this forcibly turns off the power and reboots the phone.  This should be the last resort and do this before resetting the settings of the phone.

iPhone X

This one is a bit tricky. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons AND the side button (three buttons). Your phone will power off and reboot into the Apple® logo splash screen.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

Just like the iPhone X, this one is a bit tricky. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons AND the side button (three buttons). Your phone will power off and reboot into the Apple® logo splash screen.

Press and hold the DOWN volume button AND the Sleep/Wake button. Your phone will power off and reboot into the Apple® logo splash screen.
