Gumdrop ipad rugged caseGumdrop Cases sent us a Hideaway iPad Pro 10.5″ case for review.  If you have followed our blog and tweets for a while, you know that Apple’s 10.5″ iPad is one of our favorite bits of tech. The Hideway case is similar to the DropTech used in their iPhones cranked up 10 levels.  Like all Gumdrop products, the case is stylish and endures a confidence that your tech will protected from Kaju attacks.

This case offer’s 360 degree protection. The iPad case, screen and all ports are protected.  Unlike other manufacturers, Gumdrop took care to ensure that all ports are easily accessible and fit a wide range of plugs. TouchId is easy and uninhibited.  The rugged rubber shell is textured to prevent slippage and includes a magnetically sealed kickstand.  For Apple Pencil users, a removable rubber loop is included to secure your pencil from rolling away.

In Summary…

The Droptech case is really two cases that work together to provide you the protection.  Each is custom molded out of two materials to precisely fit your iPad.  The iPad fits i a rugged plastic frame that houses the screen protector and this fits into the soft rubber bumpers.  Precisely designed channel in the plastic frame hold the rubber shell and form a tight seal holding the unit together.  No hard to open clips or snaps, it’s pretty simple to assemble.

The silicone rubber surround is heavy-duty, slightly squishy and has ridges to help you hold on to the iPad.  This case offers fantastic fall and bump protection and adds bulk to the iPad. Gumdrop Hideaway Case

Providing support and protection is the polycarbonate rear.  Aesthetically shows off the glass construction of your iPhone and providing protection from objects in your pocket or backpack. A precisely engineered cutout for the camera arrays allow for unrestricted use of the camera, flash, and microphone.

The Details…

Case Fit

Like other Gumdrop products this is very well engineered. Maybe too much so.  Like the MacBook shell, the fit of the inner rigged shell is a little difficult to put on.  You have to lift/pry the corner over the camera lens assembly and then force the iPad into the shell.  Once on it’s pretty darn solid but we feel that this can be improved.

Case Function

It’s pretty great. Use of the Hideaway case buttons and ports are seemless to the user experience.  The squishy textured rubber outer shell makes it easy to hold.  But that comes at a price of adding bulk to the iPad.  If you are a reader this makes it a little uncomfortable to use over a long period of time.  The screen protector is like others on the market and a finger print magnet.

We are pretty sure this case could stop a killer asteroid. (no not really) This is a durable case. If you are in a work environment, outdoors, or simply protecting it from the horrors of a school local then this is the case you must have! While the Apple Pencil works, there is just enough “give” in the screen protector to make us pause and worry that with repeated use of wearing into the plastic.

$69.95 is a bit steep, but if you have an iPad Pro your investment was much larger.  Still cheaper than anything that Apple(R) produces and this is more durable and rugged. (Amazon is a bit less expensive)

Overall Rating

We would recommend this to a friend and intend to use this case, a lot. It’s not an everyday case, though. The bulk and weight added detract from it.

Is it worth it?

Yes. This is the case that will protect your pricey iPad in tough environments without spending a fortunate on the O-box option. Buy directly from Gumdrop or from Amazon (amazon prices seem to be a bit lower).
